Windsor Essex County has a diverse agricultural production that is
unsurpassed in Ontario. Encompassing an area of 186 square kilometres and
possessing over 325,000 acres of rich and fertile farmland, the region is the agricultural
heartland of South-western Ontario and is valued for its agricultural production,
dairy farming and a wine producing region comprising of 13 wineries covering over
1,000 acres.
On the same latitude as northern
California, with mild winters and southern influence from Lakes Erie and St. Clair,
the region enjoys the longest growing season in Canada, averaging 212 days and 3,700
heat units annually.
Strategically located, the region is the primary gateway
to access all of Ontario and is North America’s “crossroads for commerce.”
Only 20 minutes to the Windsor, Canada
– United States border, Amherstburg is within a one hour drive of 4.5 million Americans,
within a two hour drive of 11 million Americans and within a 6 hour drive of 25
million Americans.
Presently, Windsor Essex County has
the largest greenhouse industry in North America, with almost 1,500 acres under
glass or plastic. At the centre of this vital industry is the Greenhouse & Processing
Crops Research Centre in Harrow, a centre of excellence for the development and
transfer of new technologies, crop management and environmental control.

Amherstburg Farmer's Market
Amherstburg Farmers' Market is to be open every Saturday, 8:30am to 3:30pm beginning June 5, 2010. It will be located on the property of the Malden Community and Cultural Center. The Mandate for this Farmers' Market is to:
- Develop and maintain a Famers' Market for the purpose of promoting locally grown farm, agricultural, and to a lesser degree, artisan products.
- To support public interest in the access to and consumption of, local grown Ontario products.
- To cultivate a receptive environment for related community events that focus on healthy eating, marketing the related local attractions and businesses ~ thus supporting rural economic development.
