The former Townships of Malden, Anderdon, the former Town of Amherstburg, a portion of the former Colchester North, Colchester South and even a few residents in LaSalle and Tecumseh receive water from Amherstburg. However, the Hydro-electric customers in these areas are billed and maintained by Essex Power Services and Hydro One.
The Public Works Department embarked on a program of enhanced inspection and maintenance of the Amherstburg water distribution system. The construction of innovative Water Sampling and Testing Stations will revolutionize the scheduled flushing and testing of the water distribution system which will provide for consistent testing of the quality of the drinking water and the elimination of unnecessary boil water advisories.
In addition, outdated water meters are being replaced with state of the art touch pad metres and readers which will allow for computer generated meter reading.
The Town’s 1020 fire hydrants have been labeled with an identification numbers. The identification number will assist in the documentation of maintenance activities to the watermain system. Also a number of special flushing devices have been installed on dead end sections of the water distribution system which will enable proper flushing of the entire distribution system.

Storm and Sewers
The Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance of the Town's sewage collection systems working in cooperation with the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) which is contracted to operate the treatment facilities.
Municipal Drains
The responsibilities include overseeing the construction, maintenance and operation of the municipal drains. Also included is assisting the Town Clerk in the processing of tile drainage loans and carrying out inspections in accordance with the Tile Drainage Act.
The total kilometre of Municipal Drains in the Town of Amherstburg is 283.7.
